Lesson Thirty-One — War with Midian; Inheritance East of Jordan
Focus of Lesson
This lesson focuses on the move of the people of Israel towards the Promised Land.
Pre-Class Assignments
This MUST be completed before class.
- Read Numbers 31-36 in your Bible.
- Prepare a story about the first Israel-Midianite war and the killing of the people. Your target audience is a Muslim who is defending the use of Jihad by Muslims using this text. Tell the story and give your explanation of the reasons why this might not support Holy War today. The instructor will be the Muslim. You will need to read in the Quran and Hadith to educate yourself on the basics of Holy War / Jihad in Islam.
- Memorize Numbers 32:11 (in your heart language).
- Answer the Study Questions from the Study Questions Book.
- Continue working on the Law of Moses Worksheet in Appendix II. As you are reading the text, build out step 1 on the worksheet assignment.
- Write a 100-200 word response to each of the following questions:
- Looking at Numbers Ch. 31, what do you think about this command of God? Is this not genocide? Does it apply today?
Class Timeline (50 minutes)
- 2-3 Minutes: Opening Prayer led by students
- 3-5 Minutes: Bible Fluency Song, "Pentateuch" (to save time, this should be cued up before class).
- 5 Minutes: Quiz #29
- 10-15 Minutes: One student is randomly selected to give the story presentation and all students will participate in a short debate with the instructor playing a Muslim.
- 10-15 Minutes: Discuss the following questions with the students:
- Discuss the issue of Holy War in the Bible. There will be a growing number of wars under Moses and then Joshua.
- If a pastor today said that God had commanded that we should take over the government and purge the evildoers from the land, would you follow him? Why or why not?
- The killing of the women and male children... commanded by God... how do you feel about this? Does this command and others like it relate in any way to us today?
- 5-10 Minutes: Instructor closes with their feedback to the storytelling event and their own conclusions about key points raised during the discussion.
- 2-3 Minutes: Closing Prayer
