Lesson Thirty — Baal Peor, Census, Vows
Focus of Lesson
This lesson focuses on the bronze serpent, the census, and the Sabbath.
Pre-Class Assignments
This MUST be completed before class.
- Read:
- Numbers 25-30 in your Bible.
- 1 Corinthians Ch. 5 in your Bible.
- Prepare a story about Israel's sin with the Midianites and the response of Phinehas. The target audience is a young adult college student friend with a modern agnostic belief system.
- Memorize Numbers 25:7-8 (in your heart language).
- Answer the Study Questions from the Study Questions Book.
- Continue working on the Law of Moses Worksheet in Appendix II. As you are reading the text, build out step 1 on the worksheet assignment.
- Write a 100-200 word response to each of the following questions:
- Looking at Numbers Ch. 30, how does this correlate with the modern view of women's rights? Is God right to command this? Does this apply in any way today?
Class Timeline (50 minutes)
- 2-3 Minutes: Opening Prayer led by students
- 3-5 Minutes: Bible Fluency Song, "Pentateuch" (to save time, this should be cued up before class).
- 5 Minutes: Quiz #28
- 5-7 Minutes: One student is randomly selected to give the story presentation.
- 20-25 Minutes: Discuss the following questions with the students:
- Were Phinehas' actions righteous and good? Why or why not?
- How does what happened in this example, the collective punishment of the nation for disobeying commands of God they had been taught, fit with the community of believers today? Does God judge churches for gross disobedience? Does God judge nations for this? How does this issue fit with 1 Cor. Ch. 1?
- 5-10 Minutes: Instructor closes with their feedback on the storytelling event and their own conclusions about key points raised during the discussion.
- 2-3 Minutes: Closing Prayer
