Lesson Twenty-Nine — Aaron’s Rod, Bronze Serpent, Balaam
Focus of Lesson
This lesson focuses on the continued rebellion of the people, the effects on Moses and the story of Baalam.
Pre-Class Assignments
This MUST be completed before class.
- Read Numbers 17-24 in your Bible.
- Prepare a story about Baalam and his donkey. Your target audience is little children. It needs to be fun, but also make the point of God's sovereignty and control over all things.
- Memorize Numbers 23:19 (in your heart language).
- Answer the Study Questions from the Study Questions Book.
- Continue working on the Law of Moses Worksheet in Appendix II. As you are reading the text, build out step 1 on the worksheet assignment.
- Write a 100-200 word response to each of the following questions:
- Read Numbers 21:9 and then compare to John 3:10-18. How does Jesus use the narrative of Numbers 21:9? How does this link help you better understand John 3:10-18?
Class Timeline (50 minutes)
- 2-3 Minutes: Opening Prayer led by students
- 3-5 Minutes: Bible Fluency Song, "Pentateuch" (to save time, this should be cued up before class).
- 5 Minutes: Quiz #27
- 5-7 Minutes: One student is randomly selected to give the story presentation.
- 15-20 Minutes: Discuss the following questions with the students:
- In Numbers 20 we see another rebellion by the people, but Moses's response is condemned by God.
- Why is his response condemned by God?
- Why is Moses's punishment so severe for one mistake? Even after he did so many good things, why does he deserve this punishment?
- What does Moses's punishment after decades of faithfulness tell us about the standard God holds ministry leaders to?
- 5-10 Minutes: Instructor closes with their feedback on the storytelling event and their own conclusions about key points raised during the discussion.
- 2-3 Minutes: Closing Prayer
