Lesson Eighteen — Covenant and Ten Commandments
Focus of Lesson
This lesson focuses on the establishment of the covenant between God and the Hebrews after leaving Egypt.
Pre-Class Assignments
This MUST be completed before class.
- Read Exodus 19:1-24:18 in your Bible.
- Prepare a story presentation of the giving of the 10 commandments. Present as if discussing this in an evangelistic one-on-one discussion. The instructor will be your target. Discuss their sin as described in the law of Moses.
- Memorize Exodus 20:1 (in your heart language).
- Answer the Study Questions from the Study Questions Book.
- Begin working on the Law of Moses Worksheet in Appendix II. As you are reading the text, build out step 1 on the worksheet assignment.
- Write a 100-200 word response to the following:
- Read the 10 commandments in Exodus 20. What are two categories the commandments can be divided into (Hint: Category 1 covers the first 5 commandments, Category 2 covers the second 5 commandments)? How do these categories then get reflected in the laws that are laid out in chapters 21-23?
Class Timeline (50 minutes)
- 2-3 Minutes: Opening Prayer led by students
- 3-5 Minutes: Bible Fluency Song, "Pentateuch" (to save time, this should be cued up before class).
- 5 Minutes: Quiz #16
- 7-10 Minutes: One student is randomly selected to present the story.
- 15-20 Minutes: Discuss the following questions with the students:
- Looking at Exodus 22:25-27, how could a law like that be applicable in today's world? How could this law inform how we deal with the poor in our time?
- Looking at the laws given in Exodus 21-23, how do your nation's laws line up with these? How do you think the laws given to Israel should influence our laws today?
- If creating idols of God is a sin, are any physical depictions of Jesus sinful?
- 5-10 Minutes: Instructor closes with their feedback on the storytelling event and their own conclusions about key points raised during the discussion.
- 2-3 Minutes: Closing Prayer
