Lesson Twenty — Golden Calf
Focus of Lesson
This lesson focuses on the golden calf and Israel's first rebellion against God.
Pre-Class Assignments
This MUST be completed before class.
- Read Exodus 32:1-34:35 in your Bible.
- Prepare a story presentation of the golden calf and the civil war that followed. Your intended audience is a Bible study group of young adults. Make an application point as to the nature of humans and idolatry.
- Memorize Exodus 34:6-7 (in your heart language).
- Answer the Study Questions from the Study Questions Book.
- Continue working on the Law of Moses Worksheet in Appendix II. As you are reading the text, build out step 1 on the worksheet assignment.
- Write a 100-200 word response to each of the following questions:
- What does God say about the result to humans of direct exposure to his being? What happens to Moses who just gets a little bit of exposure to God? What does that show you about the nature of God and man?
Class Timeline (50 minutes)
- 2-3 Minutes: Opening Prayer led by students
- 3-5 Minutes: Bible Fluency Song, "Pentateuch" (to save time, this should be cued up before class).
- 5 Minutes: Quiz #18
- 7-10 Minutes: One student is randomly selected to present the story.
- 15-20 Minutes: Discuss the following questions with the students:
- Why do you think that the Israelites wanted to make an idol, even after what they had seen so far? Why would Aaron agree to such a thing?
- What do you think that means for our hearts?
- Looking at the civil war, do you think this was just? Could you have followed that command? Why or why not?
- Is there any application from the civil war event for us today?
- 5-10 Minutes: Instructor closes with their feedback on the storytelling event and their own conclusions about key points raised during the discussion.
- 2-3 Minutes: Closing Prayer
