Focus of Lesson
This lesson focuses on the first part of the story of Moses.
Pre-Class Assignments
This MUST be completed before class.
- Read:
- Exodus 1:1-4:31 in your Bible.
- Read Appendix I on the name of God in the Bible.
- Prepare a story presentation of the initial life story of Moses, focusing most details on the appointment of Moses as a prophet.
- Memorize Exodus 3:13-15 (in your heart language).
- Answer the Study Questions from the Study Questions Book.
- Write a 50-75 word response to each of the following questions:
- Read Exodus 2:24. How do you understand the verse describing God remembering His covenant? What does this mean? How could He have forgotten about it?
- Compare your favorite Cebuano, Tagalog, and English translations. How is the name YHWH translated in each? What do you think is the best way and why? Do you think it would be acceptable to use other names such as Thor or Allah?
Class Timeline (50 minutes)
- 2-3 Minutes: Opening Prayer led by students.
- 3-5 Minutes: Bible Fluency Song, "Pentateuch" (to save time, this should be cued up before class).
- 5 Minutes: Quiz
- 7-10 Minutes: One student is randomly selected to present the story.
- 15-20 Minutes: Discuss the following questions with the students:
- Discuss the name of God. Is it important to use his given name correctly? Can other names not from the Bible be used for him (e.g. Allah or Thor)? How about translations of his name to other languages (e.g. Yahweh or Jehovah)?
- Looking at the story of Moses's appointment, how would you respond in a similar command? What if God told you to go to communist China and tell the dictator there to stop persecuting Christians? How would you respond?
- What do you think the call to plant churches in UPG areas looks like compared to this?
- 5-10 Minutes: Instructor closes with their feedback on the storytelling event and their own conclusions about key points raised during the discussion.
- 2-3 Minutes: Closing Prayer
