Lesson Thirteen — Joseph, Part 1; Judah and Tamar
Focus of Lesson
This lesson focuses on the first part of the story of Joseph.
Pre-Class Assignments
This MUST be completed before class.
- Read Genesis 37:1-43:34 in your Bible.
- Prepare a story presentation of the incident of Judah and Tamar. Read Mathew Ch. 1 and Luke Ch. 3 and link the story of Tamar to Jesus. Discuss the significance of this link.
- Memorize Gen. 38:26a (in your heart language).
- Answer the Study Questions from the Study Questions Book.
- Write a 100-200 word response to each of the following questions:
- When Joseph is in jail he interprets the dreams of two fellow prisoners. What do you think of this? Are dreams messages from God? Could or should you or other Christians try to interpret dreams?
Class Timeline (50 minutes)
- 2-3 Minutes: Opening Prayer led by students.
- 3-5 Minutes: Bible Fluency Song, "Pentateuch" (to save time, this should be cued up before class)
- 5 Minutes: Quiz
- 7-10 Minutes: One student is randomly selected to present the story.
- 15-20 Minutes: Discuss the following question with the students:
- Discuss the character of Judah. Is he a person you would trust? Could you be friends with him?
- Would you let him be a member of your church?
- Jesus is called the Lion of Judah (Rev 5:5). His kingship is critically linked to this identity. How is this not a shameful thing?
- Looking back at the story of Abraham vs Ibrahim, how might the view of the Bible of its "heroes" differ from Islam? What impact might that have on a follower of Muhammad vs a follower of Jesus on thier view of themselvs?
- 5-10 Minutes: Instructor closes with their feedback on the storytelling event and their own conclusions about key points raised during the discussion.
- 2-3 Minutes: Closing Prayer
