Lesson One — Course Format & Storytelling Basics
Focus of Lesson
This lesson is an introductory lesson. The purpose is to guide the student to understand the format of the class, the resources of the class, and the grading criteria.
Class Timeline (50 minutes)
- 2-3 Minutes: Opening Prayer led by Instructor
- 5-10 Minutes: Class Admin
- Discuss with students the administration of the class and student roles. Students are expected to take a fully active role in the management and responsibilities of their class.
- Class President (and an alternate):
- No later than __ minutes before class, ensure all students are present (or their whereabouts are known), take attendance, ensure all equipment is set up properly, and classroom is clean.
- Set up a responsibility sharing system to ensure that the classroom is left clean and all equipment is stored after every class.
- Class Music Leader (and an alternate): Will lead the music needed to play the Bible Fluency songs and will be ready to play an instrument for the morning songs.
- Inform the students that they need to select a Class President and Music Leader and an alternate for each by the next class.
- Inform the students that starting on the next class, the prayer and opening song will be led by the students. The Class President will ensure that each student gets an opportunity to lead.
- Introduce the students to the student guide
- Discuss the format of the classes. You will need to familiarize yourself with this format before you teach the class. The format of most classes goes as follows:
- Homework for each class will normally take 60-120 minutes per class. All homework must be done before the class. Failure to complete the homework before the class will result in a deduction of 25% from the grades earned for that class.
- In the homework, the student will read an assigned portion of scripture fully FIRST. The student SHALL NOT look at the questions before reading the text. Yes, we know it is more efficient just to answer the questions while reading the text. But by doing that, you will not see and learn the flow of the story. Learning the story flow is more important than just efficiently answering the questions. If it is discovered that you are violating this rule, your grade for that class will be reduced by 50%.
- Then the student will answer from open book a series of questions about the reading.
- Some lessons will have additional reading assignments that must be completed before coming to class.
- Then the student will memorize a key verse from the reading.
- Lastly, the student will plot out the story presentation in accordance with either the 8 Step Circle or the Integrated Three Act Structure learned in Lesson 2. This will be turned in for grading and should be used as a guide for your storytelling presentation. You may also be required to prepare some form of presentation materials like slides, etc.
- You are highly encouraged to regularly look ahead to plan out your work and ensure you keep up with the assigned workload.
- At the start of the class, a student will lead an opening prayer that relates to the part of the Bible the class is on.
- Then the music leader will lead the students in singing the current Bible Fluency song.
- Next, the students shall take a quiz that has questions sourced from the questions they answered the night before, except that this time it will be closed book.
- Next, a student (or group of students) is randomly selected to provide a retelling of the Bible reading assignment in the timeframe assigned. The presentation should be in a format appropriate for the applicable audience as tasked in the assignment. Each student must be prepared to present as the selection will be random.
- The teacher and selected students will then provide a 2-3 minute critique of the presentation.
- The teacher will lead the class in a discussion based on critical thinking question(s) from the lesson.
- The instructor will then close the class with comments and teaching based on their missions experience as it relates to this narrative.
- Discuss with the class the Bible memory verse expectations for each lesson.
- Review with the students the grading rubric for this class. Ensure that they have a good understanding of your expectations regarding these standards. Ensure that they understand that credit will only be given when performance meets the required criteria.
- Discuss the policy regarding languages used in this class.
- AT DMI there is a mixed emphasis on learning in one's "heart" language and in English. As the "lingua franca" or language of international commerce and education, the understanding of English is exceedingly useful to the student to ensure their longterm learning and educational advancement. However, the story and flow of the Bible might be better understood in one's heart language. Thus, for this course, students are highly encouraged to use a Bible in their "heart" language. The portion of the class for the storytelling assignment will be done in the student's "heart" language, or if the heart language is not known by the instructor, then a primary national trade language known by the instructor can be used. The memory verses will also be done in one's heart language. An exception may be made if the student can show good reason to the instructor. In order to support the learning of English, the assigned homework and test questions and written assignments will be in English and all answers will be in English (unless otherwise specifically stated in the assignment).
- Discuss with the students DMI's policy on plagiarism.
- Read DMI's cheating and plagiarism policy from DMI's handbook.
- Emphasize that plagiarism is both a sin (false witness and theft) as well as how it keeps the student from properly learning the materials.
- Emphasize that DMI takes this issue very seriously. Any case of suspected cheating or plagiarism can result in immediate and permanent termination from DMI's program. Those who assist in such or knowingly cover up such activities by another student may face the same outcome as the one cheating or plagiarizing.
- 2-3 Minutes Closing Prayer
