Lesson Nine — Sodom, Lot, and Abimelech

Pre-Class Assignments

This MUST be completed before class.

• Read: Genesis 18:17-20:18.
• Prepare a story presentation of the acts of the daughters of Lot. Start with the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, but the emphasis of the story is about Lot's daughters. Your intended audience is a new believer's family where they have heard that there are stories in the Bible that are supporting gross things like sexual immorality.
• Answer the Study Questions from the Study Questions Book.
• Memorize Gen. 18:20 (in your heart language).
• Write a 50-75 word response to each of the following questions:
• What were the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah (prove from the text)?
• What are the similarities between them and us today?
• Why would God put in his Holy Word the gross story of Lot and his daughters? Should this part of the Bible be studied or skipped? Why or why not?

Class Timeline (50 minutes)

• 2-3 Minutes: Opening Prayer led by students.
• 3-5 Minutes: Sing Bible Fluency Song Pentateuch through Deuteronomy
• 5 Minutes: Quiz #7
• 7-10 Minutes: One student is randomly selected to present the story.
• 15-20 Minutes: Discuss the following question with the students:
• Are there narratives in the Bible that are sinful to read because they depict gross sexual immorality (e.g. the sexual behavior of the daughters of Lot)? How can the Word of God contain gross and immoral stories? What about reading the Bible as a family with small children, at least should a family Bible study skip this section?
• From the narrative of Sodom and Gomorrah and and the Biblical narrative leading up to this point, can you determine God's moral standards of sexuality and sexual behavior? If yes, then what do you say they are and why?
• 5-10 Minutes: Instructor closes with their feedback on the storytelling event and their own conclusions about key points raised during the discussion.
• 2-3 Minutes: Closing Prayer.
